Defending the Grid for Fun and Non-Profit: Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Resilience Research at LLNL

Abstract
The power grid is in the midst of transforming from a model ofcentralized generation and one-way power flows to one with distributed
generation. In this talk, I will describe some of the challenges
presented by the coming smart grid, and research projects at LLNL
using collaborative autonomy, a form of machine learning, aimed at
overcoming those challenges. I will also briefly discuss the broader
Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Resilience program at LLNL.
About the Speaker
Steve Chapin has long had a passion for EVs, and has had a
partially-completed 1986 Porsche 911 Targa conversion in his garage
for far too long. He received a dual BS in Mathematics and Computer
Science from Heidelberg University (nee Heidelberg College), and MS
and PhD degrees from Purdue University in Computer Sciences. He
served on the faculty at Kent State University, the University of
Virginia, and Syracuse University. He recently moved to Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory to continue his work on securing the
power grid.
